Social Media Activism: The Basics

Social media is a constant factor in our society and in many of our daily lives. For personal and professional use alike, it remains an actively prominent tool for the general public. But are there functions beyond these that social media can be used for?

Social Media Activism

activism (noun) – the policy or action of using vigorous campaigning to bring about political or social change

Activism is a practice that has gotten us through history and made headway for social change. It has clearly existed long before social media was even a thought. However, social media has become a significant place for activism and has even altered the way that people address social and political issues.

The emergence of social media and digital technologies has increased communication and connection in both span and speed. We now have the ability to communicate with millions of people around the world instantaneously, taking the cliche “we have the world at our fingertips”. Because we truly do! And with this vast access comes the ability to share our thoughts and beliefs. That is where activism comes in.

Thanks to social media, we also have access to lots of information. We can read and see footage about anything from our favorite food and animals to the latest worldwide news. And in addition to this information, social media also allows for sharing and discussion. Social media presents the opportunity for users to connect with those who share the same interests and beliefs, helping to amplify their voices and allowing their opinions to get more attention.

While many of us may agree that social media has become a negative place, it is crucial to remember the capabilities it presents us with. Without the possibility of social media, many important political agendas and social movements may not have come to light, and our world would look a lot different. So don’t frown upon utilizing your social platform for activism and to do some good!
